Yasuaki Kuroda — “When Grasses and Trees Speak”

From June 6, 2026, biscuit gallery (Shinjuku, Tokyo) presents “When Grasses and Trees Speak,” a solo exhibition by gallery artist Yasuaki Kuroda.

Yasuaki Kuroda is an artist and textile dyer who, by hand-weaving silk threads dyed with plants, invites us to reconsider how we perceive our world.
He simmers grasses and trees, dyes silk threads, and weaves. Even with the same plant, the color that emerges differs with the land and climate in which it grew and the season in which it was gathered. Within that color, the time the plant has lived and the memory of the land in which it took root are layered together. Before written language existed, weaving served the role of language, binding human beings and the world into a single continuum. Kuroda's practice returns to weaving as that primal language, an attempt to look anew at the relationship between humanity and the world.

The exhibition title, “When Grasses and Trees Speak,” derives from the worldview of “sōmoku koto-dō / kusaki koto-tou” (the speaking of grasses and trees) found in the Nihon Shoki and in Shinto liturgies—a primordial world in which all things were said to converse. Kuroda has translated that voice into roughly 200 colors extracted from dried plants. They are traces that appear because grasses and trees are continuous with the world, eloquently telling of the state of the world, including the environment and humankind.

At the heart of the exhibition are large-scale panel works and an installation made of the roughly 200 colors dyed from plants. Part of this—130 colors' worth of thread frames—is arranged across the floor of the venue. The plants that became the dyes, the accumulation of colored threads born from them, and the works woven from those threads: this is an opportunity to open up, within the exhibition space, the process of creation that is normally closed within the artist's studio. We warmly invite you to view it.
