An artist based in Tokyo. Since childhood he has given form to, and pursued, “another world” that exists within him. Working principally in acrylic painting, he has also made ceramic sculptures and painted plates, three-dimensional doll works, animation and music.
"Another world" grows out of the artist's childhood memories, out of the things that have shaped him and out of small events close at hand, yet it is set out through a single narrative: an unknown civilization that reached roughly a medieval stage of development and then, for a time, perished. It is a fiction and, at the same time, the artist's inner reality. Ajiro casts himself as the archaeologist excavating that lost civilization, setting down with his brush, one after another, the distant history unfolding in front of him. The works are ancient artifacts, which is why they carry traces of decay and of age. Each work has its own period and context; the figures and imaginary monsters that appear in it are sometimes given proper names, and every scene depicted carries a meaning. Some account for origins, others are lessons or fables, others no more than a minor incident. These detailed inventions expand to the scale of dynasties, creation myths and entire civilizations, and even the artist does not yet know their full extent. Released from every constraint, "another world" is full of absurdities, and it is no wonder that cruelty and humor, the grotesque and the endearing, live side by side there. The artist often witnesses himself in the form of a "girl" and records her in paint, a doppelganger at work.
Ajiro's work draws on elements of traditional Japanese picture scrolls, medieval European manuscripts and popular religious art from many periods and places, with the influence of Hieronymus Bosch particularly pronounced. In its surfacing of the deep unconscious it can equally be related to Jung, to Surrealist visionary imagery and to Outsider Art, while also showing a close affinity with the character culture of present-day Japan.

About the artist
網代幸介（1980年生まれ）は東京を拠点とするアーティスト。幼少時からみずからの内にある「もうひとつの世界」を作品にあらわし、追求しています。アクリル彩による絵画を中心に、陶による造形や絵皿、人形の立体作品、アニメーション、音楽などを手がけてきました。
「もうひとつの世界」は、作家の子ども時代の記憶や、影響を受けたものごと、身近な出来事にもとづきながらも、「中世くらいの発達段階でいったんは滅びた、知られざる文明」というナラティブ（語り方）であらわされます。それは虚構でありながら、同時に作家の内的現実なのです。網代は、この失われた文明を発掘する考古学者として、目の前で展開される遠い過去の歴史を、つぎつぎと絵筆で描きとめ、記録していきます。作品は古代の遺物であり、朽ちたような経年変化の痕跡があるのはそのためです。 各作品には、時代設定やコンテクストがあり、登場する人物や空想的な怪物にはときに固有名があたえられ、描かれる場面には意味があります。起源を説くものであったり、教訓、寓話であったり、小さな出来事であったりと、さまざまです。これらの詳細な設定は、王朝、創世神話、文明といった壮大なスケールにまで発展し、その全貌は、作家自身にもまだわかっていません。制約から解き放たれた「もうひとつの世界」では、さまざまな不条理がみられます。残酷さとユーモア、グロテスクと可愛らしさが同居するのも、不思議ではありません。作家はしばしば「少女」の姿となった自身を目撃し、絵で記録するというドッペルゲンガーが起こります。
網代作品には、日本の伝統的な絵巻物やヨーロッパ中世写本、古今東西のさまざまな民衆的宗教美術の要素をみることができ、とりわけヒエロニムス・ボスの影響があげられます。深層意識の表出という意味ではユングや、シュールレアリスムの幻視、アウトサイダーアートと関連づけることでもできるほか、現代日本のキャラクター文化との近親性もみられます。
