Concept

I make images using duplication and inversion, which become easy in the digital realm. By chance, they sometimes come to resemble the regularity and structure of how plants put out leaves and flowers. Repeating the same shape over and over through duplication evokes sound or music. Making gradations with RGB colors can recall rainbows, sunsets, or cosmic phenomena. At times they come to look like parts of the body or cells.

I am often inspired not only by natural phenomena such as plants, insects, rainbows, and sunsets, but also by visual effects seen digitally in animation, film, and music videos. Yet each work has no specific motif. Even if it comes to look like something, I make the image so that it lands in an ambiguous place, seemingly concrete yet not.

To look like both a plant and the cosmos, yet be neither. To seem printed yet be hand-drawn. For copy and original to stand side by side at once. To look like an abstract painting, yet perhaps depict an iPad screen. Not digital or physical, but digital and physical and neither.

Crossing boundaries and being ambiguous in this way is, for me, both a resistance to existing categories and a process of searching for new ways of being.
