Lee Jonghwan (b. 1994) is a contemporary artist based in Seoul.
His conceptual approach is characterized by treating painting not as a mere 'reproduction of an image' but as a 'world in the midst of becoming,' where matter, time, and perception intersect.
For Lee Jonghwan, painting is defined not as a method of deploying a pre-existing mental image onto a support, but as a 'world in formation' itself, drawing out the possibilities inherent in the material and taking shape at this very moment.
In his work, the wooden panel for painting is not merely a support but an 'organic hexahedron' and a 'microcosm' inhabited by beings derived from painting. The grooves carved into the wood and the traces of landscape pass through processes such as casting to generate a distinctive texture that wavers between two and three dimensions.
Lee Jonghwan is an artist who continues to expand the materiality of painting, exploring how space, time, and human perception encounter the painting.
