“Nekis” treats the Winged Victory of Samothrace as a single “species,” in the way one would treat amphibians or birds, naming it the <Nike> class; the work is a fiction in which these have been collected as specimens.
I go out to photograph much as one goes birdwatching.
The specimens I collect are preserved and added to the collection.
The landscape photographs shown alongside the works serve as captions indicating where each specimen was found, or as the background to images that (appear to) record its behavior.
This specimen is at once an object for viewing the imaginary creature known as the <Nike genus> and a way of observing just what kind of layering of materials a collage is.
What that slender needle supports is nothing more than a thin scrap of paper that looks as if it might fly away, and the shadow it casts is just as opaque and just as flimsy.
Having come from different times and different places, they overlap in the single site of one panel.
