Concept
To carve wood is to pare it away. That primitive act feels less like making a form than like slowly uncovering something already hidden inside the wood. The human figure that emerges from those pared-back traces is not any particular person but an image of human existence itself. At the same time it is a projection of me, brought out through the act of carving. The stones stacked on the head describe a state of balance that holds even while it remains unstable. Human beings, too, exist by keeping their balance within a web of relationships. My hope is that the sculpture holds that quiet equilibrium and, at the same time, becomes a place where viewers can look at their own existence.

About the artist
木を彫り、削ぎ落とす。そのプリミティブな行為は、形を作るというよりも、木の中に潜んでいる何かを少しずつ見つけ出していく感覚に近い。削ぎ落とされた痕跡の中から現れる人の姿は、特定の誰かではなく、人間という存在の像である。同時にそれは、彫るという行為を通して現れる私自身の写像でもある。頭上に置かれた積み石は、不安定でありながら成立している均衡の状態を示している。人間もまた、さまざまな関係の中でバランスを取りながら存在している。彫刻はその均衡の静かな姿をとどめると同時に、鑑賞者が自らの存在を見つめる場となることを願っている。
