Ai Natori
Born in Saga Prefecture. Graduated, Department of Imaging Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Art and Design, Musashino Art University.
From childhood, studied painting under Isao Noda, a painter of the Kodo Bijutsu Kai. Seeking a more abstract mode of expression, entered the Department of Imaging Arts at Musashino Art University, expanding into VJ work, installation, and performance. Installation works were also exhibited at 'The Imagination of Information Art' at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. In spring 2011, returning to her origins, she restarted production through drawing, then won the KATHARINE HAMNETT LAB DESIGN AWARD and a Newcomer Award at YOUNG ART TAIPEI. She is active mainly abroad, including an exhibition at the Carrousel du Louvre.
Concept
Blue: the raw color of the sea, the ancestor of life, and also the color of death, stripped of warmth. That it can hold contradictory images seems to be a manifestation of the concept that life and death each contain the other. Because it is a color that holds the fleeting sensation of two things wavering and intersecting as they at times try to become one, I, and many others, am captivated by it, attempting and seeking the sublimation of diverse emotions. After the 2011 earthquake, the fleeting sensation I had vaguely held became clear, and for that very reason I came to feel that the world I live in is stronger and more beautiful. Through a blue world, I want to depict the strength and beauty of the fleeting moment in which environment and people, self and other, waver and intersect.
