Yuzuki

Born in 2004

Statement

Yuzuki makes paintings, picture books and poems based on a story of growing up: a model student (Kanako Mineuchi), afraid of the caste system and herd mentality that run through elementary and middle school, keeps trying to stay “ordinary,” until she falls in love with an eccentric classmate named Yoshizawa who lives without caring what others think — and gradually begins to live as herself.

Her work turns its attention to those who, as parts in the machinery of society, have been pretended not to be heard, pretended not to be seen, and sometimes made to seem never to have existed at all.
