Statement
The history of painting is almost the history of depicting people: human beings have been painted in every age, and the results vary so widely that they hardly seem to show the same species. That is because painters have never simply recorded human appearance; they have responded with great sensitivity to the values and the ideas of a time and a place, things that cannot be seen directly.

絵の歴史は人を描く歴史と言っていいほど、いつの時代にも人が描かれ、そしてそれらは 同じ種の生物を描いているとは思えないほどに変化に富んでいます。なぜなら、単なる人の 外観を描いてきたのではなく、直接は目に見えない時代や地域の価値観、思想に敏感に反応し描いてきたからに他ならないからです。
