Statement

You could say the history of painting is a history of painting people. In every era people have been depicted, and those depictions vary so widely you can hardly believe they are of the same species. That is because what has been painted is not merely the outward appearance of the human being, but a sensitive response to the values and ideas of an era and a place that cannot be seen directly.
