Statement
It would not be an exaggeration to say the history of painting is the history of depicting people; in every era people have been depicted, and they vary so greatly that it is hard to believe they depict the same species. This is because painters have not merely depicted people's outward appearance, but have sensitively responded to and depicted the values and ideas of an era or region that are not directly visible.
